Let me tell you something dear viewer (and, I know you're not viewers *Mike and Tom Eat Snacks reference* listen now) ... anyway, let me tell you, this mix was so difficult ... Tom Waits is my favorite songwriter and possibly my favorite musical artist of all time (keeps going back and forth between him and Yo La Tengo) ... I have almost all of his albums, and know a majority of them very well ... this is not to brag, just to let you know how difficult it was to make a single disc "Best Of" mix of this incredible man ... But, I finally did it, and, I must say I'm very proud of it ... here you will find 78 glorious minutes, 21 mind blowing tracks, representing 9 different great albums from Tom Waits .... I encourage you to explore any albums that peak your interest after listening to this mix (which I hope at least one person does) .... anyway, without further ado, here is the tracklist, and the link can be found at the bottom of this post:

Hip-Hop Anthology Mix

Hello world, I want to give you a present. Honestly, and I don't mean to sound full of myself, this is a fantastic present. If I were to come across this and either be interested in starting to listen to Hip-Hop music or already knowledgeable about Hip-Hop music I would be really excited. My present to you is a 3 Disc Hip-Hop Anthology Mix I recently compiled myself, of 60 fantastic Hip-Hop songs from 60 different incredible Hip-Hop artists that come from 60 classic and definitely worth your time Hip-Hop albums. Why I Emphatically Support Park 51 (aka: Ground Zero Mosque")

With all of the controversy surrounding what has been labeled the “Ground Zero Mosque” I have been forced to reconcile in my mind how I feel about religious freedom and being socially considerate. I think you would be hard pressed to find someone who actually believes that the Park51 (formerly Cordoba House) group does not have the legal right to create this “Ground Zero Mosque”. Most of the attacks against the building have been concerning whether it is insensitive to New Yorkers and Americans hurt forever by the attacks of 9/11. So, the following is my commentary on why I feel that not only is it not insensitive, it is necessary and should be considered an uplifting event.

First of all, people are so caught up with the term Mosque. Americans seem to equate Mosques to terrorist breeding grounds. Some Americans see building a Mosque as insulting because they feel it’s the same thing as putting a flag in the ground of land that was just conquered. I believe this logic is extremely flawed, but, that’s not what this post is about, and I won’t go into detail on that. So, some people hear the term Mosque thrown around and are scared and angry; and ultimately disillusioned and ignorant of what the building actually is. The “Ground Zero Mosque” is not a Mosque at all, but a community center. I’m sure you’ve heard this all before, but, have you gone to Park51's website to see what their vision is in moving forward with the building? The following comes from their website, addressing the vision:

“In the spirit of tolerance and service, the Muslim community of New York envisions a world-class facility and an unprecedented community center as a gesture of our dedication to our city. At a time of economic hardship, Park51 will constitute an investment of over $100 million of infrastructure in lower Manhattan, creating over 150 full-time jobs and over 500 part-time jobs, and providing much needed space, open to all, for community activities, health and wellness, arts and culture and personal and professional development.”

The following is from a blog posting entitled “The Cordoba House is not a Mosque” by those involved with the planning of the building:

“What YCMA is to Christians or the JCC is for Jews, we want the Cordoba House to be for Muslim Americans. This demands that it meets certain standards, such as welcoming everyone from the community, and refraining from proselytizing. With an auditorium, swimming pool, fitness center, conference rooms, and a restaurant, by no standard of the imagination could this community center be considered a mosque.”

There will be a prayer area for Muslims inside the building; however, the main focus of the Park 51 is to help the citizens in the area and to bring people of all faiths together in a place where peaceful discussion can happen. In a blog posting entitled “Why All Americans Have a Stake in Cordoba House” the author asserts that creating this building is declaring war on terrorism:

“Cordoba House is not a mosque but a community center that would be open to people of all faiths. There would be a private area for Muslim prayer set aside, but the majority of the complex would be for general community usage …. This is exactly the kind of thing that Anwar al Awlaki and Osama bin Laden most fear - muslims in America rejecting their call to jihad and instead embracing their identity as citizens of America and embracing their civic responsibilities to better themselves and their non-muslim neighbors. And in doing so, wage a true, effective jihad against terrorism.”

The imam, or religious leader, involved directly with this project is Feisal Abdul Rauf. In March 2003, Feisal Abdul Rauf consulted with the FBI involving counterterrorism efforts and relations with the Muslim community. In 2005 Rauf wrote a book entitled “What’s Right With Islam: A New Vision for Muslims and the West”. A description of the book states the following:

“What's Right with Islam elaborates in satisfying detail a vision for a Muslim world that can eventually embrace its own distinctive forms of democracy and capitalism, aspiring to a new Cordoba - a time when Jews, Christians, Muslims, and all other faith traditions will live together in peace and prosperity.”

Imam Feisal’s honest intent in creating this center is best captured an article from the New York Times entitled “Muslim Prayers Fuel Spiritual Rebuilding Project by Ground Zero”:

“A presence so close to the World Trade Center, ‘where a piece of the wreckage fell,’ said Imam Feisal Abdul Rauf, the cleric leading the project, ‘sends the opposite statement to what happened on 9/11. We want to push back against the extremists,’.”

Also, we shouldn’t forget that many of the New Yorkers and Americans hurt forever by the 9/11 attacks are Muslim Americans. To exclude them from those hurt by the attacks is unfair and insensitive to the population. For peaceful American Muslims, to have a community center in the surrounding area of Ground Zero should speak volumes to America and the World. It’s an idea that should be embraced, not vehemently and hatefully attacked.

As Americans we need to ask ourselves, why are the majority of us against this project and what does this say about us as a people?

1. Smog - Held - Knock Knock - This song is really awesome ... Callahan's voice is just awesome, the music is cool and kinda has a nice little groove throughout ... I really enjoy it a lot ... one of my fave Smog songs

2. Devo - Satisfaction - Q: Are We Not Men? A: We are Devo! - I really love this whole album a LOT, and this is a really great cover version of The Rolling Stones ... not the biggest Stones fan, not really opposed either ... but, I loves it! Here is a pretty awesome live performance of it! Not the best quality, but, it's super fun

3. Tom Waits - Clap Hands - Rain Dogs - Ahhhhhhhh snap! This is my favorite album of all time and this is one of the best songs on an album filled with great songs ..... reallllly creeepy and smooth .... it's really oddily and creepily lovely

4. Ghostface Killah - Wu Banga 101 - Supreme Clientele - Finally a rap song ... took long enough, geez ... Ok, Ghostface is definitely not my favorite .... sometimes, I don't even like him ... but, this song is starting out really nice ... most likely because it wasn't Ghostface ... and then he comes in, and it's ok ... I just don't appreciate being yelled at so much Ghost! ... but, it's a nice song, with an alright beat, some good rapping, nice flow ... yeah, it's aaaiiiighhht

5. Wu Tang Clan - Tar Pit - 8 Diagrams - Not much of a change here ... "sit back, let me do my Sinatra thing" .... nice line ... Wu Tang is just awesome awesome awesome .... this song is really good .... best rap groups ever for sure ... let's of head bumpin' to this

6. Natalie Imbruglia - Torn - Left of the Middle - Haha! Yes ... this was quite a change in pace and mood ... this song takes me back to the 90's and I love that .... it's a real nice catchy song .... but, I think I liked it a lot more back in the 90's than now ... the same is not true for Tubthumping by Chumbawumba, which I totally like a lot more today than i did in the 90's

7. Rage Against the Machine - Mic Check - The Battle of Las Angeles - You know, I've recently been getting back into RATM as they are awesome to listen to while working out ... this song is definitely not one of their best ... but, it sounds real good while lifting weights!

8. Ben Folds Five - Kate - Whatever and Ever Amen - Ohh, good old Ben Folds ... not my favorite, or one of my favorite Ben Folds songs .... but, it's fun, catchy and pretty alright

9. Jawbreaker - Indictment - 24 Hour Revenge Therapy - Yeah! One of my favorite bands eva ... this song is a great example of why they are awesome punky music .... His voice is great and the music is real nice too .... this is a fun song to bob your head to and dance a little and rock out to

Pedro the Lion - A Mind of Her Own - Winners Never Quit - I've been getting more and more into this band as of late .... really impressing me ... they have some real good jams ... this is an example of one of those good jams .... his voice is great, and the music on this is pretty upbeat for a PTL song, but, it's real great! This really takes me back to college life ... simpler times my friends ... it's really great, and, sometimes I can't believe how bizarre her voice is!

24. Mountain Goats - Tallahassee

I've only recently gotten into the Mountain Goats, and this album instantly grabbed me as being really remarkable ... there are some truly great songs on this album and the instrumentation and songwriting is top notch for sure

Sorry to my buds who really like Death Cab a lot, but, this is my favorite thing Ben Gibbard has ever done ... it is also super nostalgic for me ... my favorite song is "Nothing Better", and Ben has a line in it and I wonder if he knows it's not accurate ... "like a goalie tending a net in the third quarter" ... as far as I can think there is not a sport that has a goalie tending a net that has quarters ... maybe i'm wrong

This band is really awesome and diverse and keep pumping out quality releases ... personally, I think this is their best and a really inventive album

I think Neko Case has one of the best voices I've ever heard, and probably my personal favorite ... this album is really great and pretty country (in a good way) ... check the video below for an example of how incredible her voice is

15. Yo La Tengo - And Then Nothing Turned Itself Inside-Out

I can't listen to this album all the time, but when the mood strikes there is almost nothing better ... this is one of my favorite bands of all time with one of their best albums to date

14. Arcade Fire - Neon Bible

Arcade Fire are proving to be a wonderful band and it'll be interesting to see what they do next ... this is only one of two bands with two appearances on the list ... I love both albums they have released, but, I love this one a little less

I really like his take on the singer songwriter style ... a little weird and unpredictable and truly original

Yea, she is a bit of a freak ... but, she's a bit of a freak that knows how to write incredible music ... this isn't my favorite album of hers ... but, it is really great nonetheless

To me, this album gets better with each listen ... great throughout with several stand out songs

8. Grizzly Bear - Veckatimest

The other album from 2009 ... this one is a grower and has been getting better with each listen since earlier this year ... wonderful harmonies and great songwriting mixed with fantastic instrumentation

7. Sufjan Stevens - Seven Swans

By far my favorite Sufjan album ... I hope he does a simpler banjo album again sometime soon!

I absolutely love Iron and Wine ... but, I don't know if they can ever top their first release ... too beautiful for words

The only rap album on the list ... there were a lot of great rap albums in the 00's but it's so hard to compare rap to other forms of music ... however, this is by far my favorite rap album of the decade and I had to include it

Far and away my favorite album of the decade ... no question about it ... perfect from start to finish

Today I would like to provide you with my "Jam of the Week" ... I think every Monday I'll share a really great song that I love

This week's jam of the week comes from Neil Young ...

In 1969 Neil Young released the song "Down By the River" on the album "Everybody Knows This is Nowhere" ... Neil was 24 at the time and even though it was written so long ago he still plays it at shows today ... It's a long song, but well worth the listen ... it has some of my favorite guitar work from him ... well, here you go!

A New Direction

Hello out there, so, this blog is going a new direction ...

I love making Mix Cd's a lot! So, what I'm planning on doing is posting about these Mix Cd's and providing you, the reader, with the track list, a link so you can download the mix, and a few bonus things like my commentary and maybe some videos of the songs or something AWESOME ...

Also, I might begin blogging about other stuff too besides music ...
